Greetings, Fillies and Gentlecolts of EquestrUSA.
It's been some time since I've written you, but I have not been idle. Well, not completely. After my time as Secretary General of Sigma, I down shifted quite a bit and spent some time with my girl, smoking ourselves retarded and watching Legend of Zelda playthroughs on YouTube. It's been nice.
I really haven't had much direction since the end of Russia's occupation and it seems as if our Sim United States have felt similarly adrift.
I tend not to write articles unless I think they're needed and, with the uproar surrounding a certain high profile scandal, I think it's needed.
The facts, as I have them, are these:
Pfeiffer was approached by Poland yesterday about a new Alliance.
Sweden and UK are already on-board and leaving Sigma.
Spain will not be included at this time and it seems unlikely in the future.
We would and Sweden and the UK will retain our MPP's with Spain.
Pfeiffer has made no agreement, but said he was open to the possibility and approached Congress for a discussion.
There has been quite a lot of emotionally charged rhetoric surrounding this and, while I have the utmost respect for Khaled and Pariah, their response seems to be in pretty poor taste. Regardless of what you think of the President, I think the President should be free to develop and form the basis of policy without fear of chunks taken out of context being used to smear him by people with privileged information.
I don't think you'd have appreciated it much if Pfeiffer had used his privileged knowledge, as Speaker, against you Khaled. And, unless I've missed something, I don't see a conspiracy at work.
So, let's get into the nuts and bolts of this and maybe we can all gain a better understanding.
First, we must understand the behind the scenes history of Sigma.
I think about two months ago, I was a freshly minted Vice-President and Khaled had just filled the CP slot Uncle Sam had evacuated. In the midst of getting the new administration in order, we also had an alliance that was nearly as new as Khaled's CP medal. I was elected as Secretary General and our offensive against Russia went off without a hitch. (I'd like to point out here that during that first 24 hours, Poland did not attack Russia during that critical time and only did after the proverbial wall had been broken, claimed all the spoils and gloated for weeks. I am no fan of Poland.) We then turned to the task of rebuilding the nation and building the alliance.
As you might be aware, I strongly supported drawing Russia into the alliance. This would have been a bold move and would have not sat well with Poland, but Russia would have been a strong ally and an asset to the Alliance. Through the efforts of the US State Department, we were able to woo Custo enough to get a serious meeting with him. Russia's main concern was that Sigma was too closely aligned with TM and that they would have to abandon their friends. I assured him that Sigma was it's own alliance with it's own interests and was neither pro-ALPHA nor pro-TM and that our apparent TM support was support for our own friend, China.
This would have been a bold move and had the potential to dramatically alter the power-structure of the game. Custo saw this and it appealed to him enough to assuage his concerns of treachery and he agreed to bring it up before their Congress while we got informal approval from our member nations.
Unfortunately, I found out that I was entirely wrong.
Upon learning that this pipe-dream might become a reality, some of our members started getting cold feet. In the end, Sweden cast a 'No' vote that prevented Russia's membership over fear that their longtime friend, Poland, who was currently occupying Russia would be angry about it.
Now, I understand that Sweden and Poland are close friends and that's all well and good. But Poland was not and at no time has ever been a member of Sigma and, if you don't mind my saying so, it's damn stupid to run an alliance based on the interests of non-members.
I was... Well, I wouldn't say heart-broken but it was in the same ballpark. It's at that moment that, in my heart and mind, I stopped being Secretary General of Sigma and, effectively I was not. I disengaged about 50% and a couple weeks later, while I was busy with my brother's wedding and by-and-large without internet access, ALPHA broke up.
When I returned, I learned that 6 former ALPHA members came and applied to Sigma. All were rejected, not because we didn't want them, but because some of our friends might be upset and timidity was the rule of the day and shortly afterwards I was canned for inactivity and not a f*** was given.
Understand this, if nothing else. Sigma is and has been doomed to failure for some time. And it's because we were p***ies who were afraid of a real fight or to challenge someone bigger.
So, now maybe you understand the context of all this a bit better.
Sweden and the UK, though the UK less so, aren't leaving Sigma so much as they're joining the alliance they've been in since we started and that alliance is called 'Poland is the biggest kid on the block'.
Sigma is left with a tainted reputation and is now free to court the people we've already shot down for really, really stupid reasons. I'd be surprised if any were interested, or if anyone would be interested for that matter, given that and given that we simply don't have a lot to offer. To be honest, rebuilding would be more trouble than just starting a 'new' alliance with our current members.
As for Sweden and the UK, I have this to say to you. While I understand your reasoning and decision making and while I disagreed with it, I still respected it. But you know, it really irritates me to see you leave an alliance for the faults you insisted upon. We had a chance to do something that would have rocked the world, it would have been difficult, but it would have been exciting and, win or lose, I'd have been proud to say I contributed. But you were scared and choose the safest, most well lit path and I can already feel myself falling asleep while we conquer the world.
For my part, I'm not inclined to join this new alliance. I'm not inclined to stay in Sigma either. I don't see any options I'm particularly excited about, but perhaps my eyes are clouded by my regret over that missed, golden opportunity. I don't know. I've lost all taste for the international scene and am dedicating myself to figuring out this 'Economy' stuff. That seems a lot more exciting.
In parting and after having gone on so long, I ask you all to take a moment and consider this.
Spain is our friend and Poland is a potential new friend. They don't get along but I'd like it if we could all stop talking about traitors and backstabbing and all that. If someone's your friend, they don't stop being your friend when you make friends with someone they don't like and if they do, they aren't very good friends and you're probably better off without them. I think Spain is a good friend and, while they may be disappointed, I don't think they'll hold a grudge.
Pfeiffer hasn't done anything but keep options open and submit them to Congress for approval. I'm pretty sure that's the CP's job, in general. These calls for impeachment and civil war are, frankly, an absurd over-reaction. I frequently don't get along with Pfeiffer, we have diametrically opposed personalities, but we manage to work together and I respect him for the amount of effort he puts in. I've seen Pfeiffer do things that I'd call dirty and people have every right to call him out on them, but this isn't one of those things and I think we need to chill out on all this.
Being majority occupied by Russia was more fun than being in a Super-Alliance will ever be. The only victory in this game is the enjoyment that can be gotten from it, everything else is temporary and whoever is having the most fun is the only real winner.
I don't miss Government in the slightest.
It's four in the morning and I've got a headache, so sorry for no ponies. Maybe I'll edit them in tomorrow.
