Hi everyone,

First, happy Nevruz to all... I've prefered to write "Nowruz" in title above as it is a common international name, but we call it "Nevruz" in Turkey. Never mind... I just wanted to share a newspaper article which is published today in Today's Zaman. In Turkey, celebrations of Nevruz is mostly manipulated by some Kurdish organizations in a bad way. This article will give a brief summary of the history of Nevruz and I hope, it will indicate the absurdity of being like a vandal during the Nevruz day...

For those of us who grew up in Turkey's western provinces, the Nevruz festival was something unheard of in our childhood. When we heard about this annual celebration for the first time, we believed it had something to do with the Kurds' political protests. Only some years later did we realize that Nevruz is a very old tradition and a festival celebrated in a vast geographical area by a number of different ethnic, religious and cultural groups.

The meaning, symbolism and even the date of the celebration of Nevruz depend on the cultural heritage of these divergent groups. Some people celebrate it on March 21, others on March 22 or 23. Most academics agree the festival first appeared among the ancient Persians. Some groups see it as the beginning of the new year, and others the first day of spring; the common point is that it celebrates the beginning of a new period.

It is celebrated in Muslim countries both by Sunnis and Shias. Perhaps this indicates that the festival has little to do with religion -- it was celebrated well before these people embraced Islam and these people have preferred to preserve this particular tradition. In Central Asia's Turkic language-speaking countries, Nevruz is seen as the commemoration of mythological events recounted in the Ergenekon epic, about how Turks' ancestors left the inaccessible valleys of the Altay Mountains where they originated with the help of a she-wolf. In other words, for the Turkic world, Nevruz celebrates the emergence of the Turkish people as a nation and as an actor in world events. Therefore, this is still a celebration about a "beginning," maybe not directly linked to the seasonal changes, but referring to a turning point in the course of history.

Kurdish communities in different countries, of course, give a different meaning to Nevruz, an interpretation which has little to do with Central Asian mythology. They tell the story of Kawa the blacksmith who led a popular uprising against a ruthless foreign ruler. This particular version emphasizes unity and resistance to oppression.

It is interesting to note that blacksmithing and iron are common themes in the Kurdish and Turkish versions of the Nevruz legends, as according to the Ergenekon epic, the first Turks were able to leave their hidden valley by melting down the huge iron mass blocking their way out. Maybe this has something to do with the collective memory about the discovery of iron smelting and blacksmithing techniques; in other words, the beginning of the Iron Age. The ethnic or "nationalist" interpretation of the festival probably appeared much later and the original meaning of the festival, which was about a common and fundamental transformation in the history of civilization, has been forgotten with time.

Overall, Nevruz has been celebrated by people from diverse cultural backgrounds for thousands of years, it is a national holiday in a number of countries and the United Nations in 2010 recognized the International Day of Nowruz. So perhaps there is no point in asking what exactly all these people are commemorating. People come together and celebrate -- this is what festivals are about. These people don't always have the same interpretation of the festival, but the fact that millions of people come together in peace and harmony and enjoy themselves is something worth celebrating.

Emphasizing the political aspects of this day, using it as an opportunity to express and escalate daily political bickering, transforming the celebrations into a security matter by damaging public property for example, does nothing but harm the festival's true value.

I wish you all a very happy Nevruz.

Elbette, farklı ülkelerdeki Kürt toplulukları Nevruz'a Orta Asya mitolojisiyle pek ilgisi olmayan başka anlamlar getiriyorlar.

Hepinize mutlu Nevruzlar dilerim.

USA as a world power? In E-Sim it is possible!

In E-Sim we have a huge, living world, which is a mirror copy of the Earth. Well, maybe not completely mirrored, because the balance of power in this virtual world looks a bit different than in real life. In E-Sim, USA does not have to be a world superpower, It can be efficiently managed as a much smaller country that has entrepreneurial citizens that support it's foundation. Everything depends on the players themselves and how they decide to shape the political map of the game.

Work for the good of your country and see it rise to an empire.

Activities in this game are divided into several modules. First is the economy as a citizen in a country of your choice you must work to earn money, which you will get to spend for example, on food or purchase of weapons which are critical for your progress as a fighter. You will work in either private companies which are owned by players or government companies which are owned by the state. After progressing in the game you will finally get the opportunity to set up your own business and hire other players. If it prospers, we can even change it into a joint-stock company and enter the stock market and get even more money in this way.

In E-Sim, international wars are nothing out of the ordinary.

"E-Sim is one of the most unique browser games out there"

Become an influential politician.

The second module is a politics. Just like in real life politics in E-Sim are an extremely powerful tool that can be used for your own purposes. From time to time there are elections in the game in which you will not only vote, but also have the ability to run for the head of the party you're in. You can also apply for congress, where once elected you will be given the right to vote on laws proposed by your fellow congress members or your president and propose laws yourself. Voting on laws is important for your country as it can shape the lives of those around you. You can also try to become the head of a given party, and even take part in presidential elections and decide on the shape of the foreign policy of a given state (for example, who to declare war on). Career in politics is obviously not easy and in order to succeed in it, you have to have a good plan and compete for the votes of voters.

You can go bankrupt or become a rich man while playing the stock market.

The international war.

The last and probably the most important module is military. In E-Sim, countries are constantly fighting each other for control over territories which in return grant them access to more valuable raw materials. For this purpose, they form alliances, they fight international wars, but they also have to deal with, for example, uprisings in conquered countries or civil wars, which may explode on their territory. You can also take part in these clashes, although you are also given the opportunity to lead a life as a pacifist who focuses on other activities in the game (for example, running a successful newspaper or selling products).

At the auction you can sell or buy your dream inventory.

E-Sim is a unique browser game. It's creators ensured realistic representation of the mechanisms present in the real world and gave all power to the players who shape the image of the virtual Earth according to their own. So come and join them and help your country achieve its full potential.
