Political Parties
A party is a political entity which you can join in e-Sim, competing with other parties for representation in Congress through the acquisition of seats, as well as producing candidates for the Country President. Parties often consider themselves small communities, and as such, the two main UK political parties have their own IRC channels - #tpp and #unifyuk on the Rizon network (see Stage 9 for more information).
You can join a party by navigating to "My Places" and then "Party", where you can also see how many members each party has and who they are. Once you have joined a party, using this button will take you to a page detailing the party you are in, its membership count, and its Party President. This is illustrated in
Fig. 1 .

UK Parties
There are two main UK political parties;
The People's Party and
UnifyUK.
The People's Party (TPP) is the UK's largest party, with a membership of around 90 users. It currently controls a majority in congress, and the position of Country President (explained later in this guide). It was founded by
Ranflax in the early days of e-Sim.
UnifyUK (UUK) is the UK's second largest party, with a membership of around 40 users. It is a relatively new party, replacing the "UKZP" in January 2012. The party's membership has grown considerably in recent weeks. It was founded in its current format by
GaryTC .
Whichever party you choose to join, they both have an active community on the
e-UK forums .
Political Offices
A variety of both in-game and external roles within parties government are offered for players of e-Sim. Fig. 2 illustrates the four main roles, and their purposes within the game.
Fig. 2 - The main political roles available within e-Sim. See the next section for more information about ministers.
Ministries and Ministers
The role of the UK government is usually divided into four "ministries" by the Country President. The ministers in charge of these ministries are:
*
Minister of Defence (currently
Quagmire ) - responsible for planning military strategy, the operational use of defense systems and hospitals, and managing the UK's state military force - the British Army.
*
Minister of Finance (currently
Luke Warm ) - responsible for using government funding to produce wealth for the country, and stimulate the economy in order to maximise wealth production and therefore increase the military and domestic capabilities of the country.
*
Minister of Foreign Affairs (currently
emmm21ics (also known as Angelique_b)) - responsible for negotiations with foreign powers and the big alliances (FORTIS and ALPHA - explained later in the guide).
*
Minister of Home Affairs (currently
hungry_eyes ) - responsible for implementing government incentives, keeping the active population occupied, and working on tutorials and tools to help new players.
The ministries, as outlined above, are often willing to accept help from players who apply, who may be given duties which can provide valuable experience for any future ministerial role the player is interested in.
Voting & Elections
On any election day (
5th for Country President,
15th for Party President,
25th for Congress), you will be presented with an extra task in your daily tasks panel, telling you to vote; as shown in
Fig. 3.

Selecting the vote task will take you to the elections page, where you can select your candidate by pressing the vote icon. You can also view their "Presentation" here (manifesto), which outlines their main policies and ideas.
Fig. 4 illustrates the elections page.

In congressional elections, you will be presented with a large choice of candidates, and the elections page will show their party allegiance, as well as their presentation. Players often choose to vote for someone from their own party, but it is important to read their presentation too. Results for all elections are hidden until the next day, and congressional seats are not, unlike some similar games, allocated by region.
Running For Congress
Applying for official candidature for congress is often conducted on the
e-UK forums , in which case you will need access to your party subforum, which you can request in the Private Forum Requests section. There, the Party President will often post up a thread asking for candidates, and you can apply. Often, however, the party president will make an in game article requesting candidates too, so its worth keeping an eye on the media.
Running for congress is a good way to rack up some experience in the game if you are new and dedicated. Ministerial positions generally require experience in a ministry before being accepted, but don't let this put you off applying. You can apply for a ministerial position by contacting a Country President candidate before the CP elections on the 5th of each month.
Political Medals & Achievements
There are two medals you can acquire in-game related to political activity. Both reward you with 5 gold for achieving them, and they can be acquired multiple times. As outlined in
Fig. 5, they are the
Congressman Medal, and the
President Medal.

Similarly, there are also a number of achievements you can acquire (although there are no rewards for these). They are listed in
Fig. 6, along with the requirements to achieve them, and are listed under the "Social" category of your achievements page.

Alliance Politics
It is important to also understand international politics. Alliances play a major role in how a country's foreign affairs are conducted, and who a country may be allied to or the enemy of militarily. There are currently three major alliances within e-Sim. These are:
*
ALPHA - A military alliance consisting of 12 member countries. The largest members include Bulgaria, Lithuania and Portugal.
*
FORTIS/VETO - Two allied military alliances which have a combined membership of 20 countries, including heavy hitters such as Poland, Serbia and Turkey. The UK was formerly a member of this alliance.
Some countries (such as the UK) have adopted a position of neutrality, and whilst remaining friendly with many members of both alliances, do not consider themselves a member of either, and are not tied to fighting for either side.
Glossary
You will often see a fairly large amount of abbreviations and terminology related to e-Sim, politics, and other similar subjects being used in-game and on IRC and the forums.
Fig. 7 is a useful table of basicdefinitions that you may wish to keep handy.
